The Second Volume of John Prince’s “Worthies of Devon”.
Trans. Devon Assoc., vol. XXXII, (1900), pp. 301-308.

Prepared by Michael Steer
The paper was presented at the Association’s August 1900 Totnes meeting. John Prince (1643–1723), was vicar of Totnes and Berry Pomeroy and a biographer. He is best known for his Worthies of Devon, a series of biographies of Devon-born notables from pre-Norman Conquest to his own era and a must-read for the serious Devon genealogist. He became the subject of a sexual scandal, the court records of which became a book in 2001 and a play in 2005. A comprehensive biography with a section on his magnum opus is available in Wikipedia. The article, from a copy of a rare and much sought-after journal can be downloaded from the Internet Archive. Google has sponsored the digitisation of books from several libraries. These books, on which copyright has expired, are available for free educational and research use, both as individual books and as full collections to aid researchers.
