Notes on the Neighbourhood of Taw Marsh, Dartmoor
by
Arthur B. Prowse, M.D. Lond. F.R.C.S. Eng.
Trans. Devon. Assoc. 1890, Vol. XXII, maps, plates, pp. 185-199.
Prepared by Michael Steer
The paper was presented at the Association’s July 1890 Barnstaple meeting and provides the genealogist with a treasury of names associated with the earliest research into our county’s unique topography and archaeology. Taw Marsh consists of two large stretches of bog, each about one-third of a mile long, and from one to two hundred yards broad, separated by a strip of firmer ground through which runs a small tributary of the Taw. The Marsh lies towards the south of Belstone village and is in a natural amphitheatre and is bordered by Cosdon, Metheral and Belstone. At Steeperton Tor the Taw flows rapidly down the valley to the marsh plain. The author was a member of the Association’s Dartmoor Exploration Committee. The article, from a copy of a rare journal can be downloaded from the Internet Archive. Google has sponsored the digitisation of books from several libraries. These books, on which copyright has expired, are available for free educational and research use, both as individual books and as full collections to aid researchers.
