Prepared by Michael Steer
The paper was presented at the Association’s July 1916 Plymouth meeting. Swashbuckling “sea-hawk”, Dartmouth pirate and politician Robert Wenyngton, alias “Cane” was selected as Medieval Member of Parliament (MP) for the month of July by The History of Parliament website. Robert Wenyngton was a 15th century Dartmouth merchant at a time when it was one of the most important ports in the West of England. His birth and death dates are unknown, but there are records of incidents in his life that occurred between 1439 and 1462. He was Mayor of Dartmouth in 1446, Junior Member of Parliament for Dartmouth in February, 1449, and re- elected Senior Member of Parliament in November, 1449. He was Receiver of Dues in the ports of Exeter and Dartmouth and Collector of Customs. The Paper, from a copy of a rare and much sought-after journal can be downloaded from the Internet Archive. Google has sponsored the digitisation of books from several libraries. These books, on which copyright has expired, are available for free educational and research use, both as individual books and as full collections to aid researchers.
