Fifth Report of the Committee on Devonshire Folk-lore

by

G. Doe

Transactions of the Devonshire Association, Exeter: James G. Commin, Vol. XII, (1880), pp. 99-113

Prepared by Michael Steer

The Report was presented at the Association’s July 1879 Totnes meeting. The Devonshire Association, founded in 1862, is a non-profit organization, dedicated to the study and appreciation of all things Devonian. It is the only society concerned with every aspect of the county and is the only one of its kind in Britain. The Committee’s Report has again been organized with the following section headings: Stories and Traditions; Charms or Medical Superstitions; Witchcraft; General Folk-Lore; and Popular Beliefs and Sayings. The name of the contributor is appended to each of the notes. The article, from a copy of a rare and much sought-after journal can be downloaded from the Internet Archive. Google has sponsored the digitization of books from several libraries. These books, on which copyright has expired, are available for free educational and research use, both as individual books and as full collections to aid researchers.
The Committee:
Mr. P. F. S, Amery, Mr. G. Doe, Mr. R. Dymond, Rev. W. Harpley, Mr. P. Q, Karkeek, and Mr. J. Brooking Rowe—initially established for the purpose of collecting notes on Devonshire Folk-Lore.
