Second Report of the Committee on Devonshire Folk-lore

by

R.J. King

Transactions of the Devonshire Association, Exeter: James G. Commin, Vol. VIII, (1876), pp. 49-58.

Prepared by Michael Steer

The Report was presented at the Association’s July 1877 Kingsbridge meeting. The Devonshire Association, founded in 1862, is a non-profit organization, dedicated to the study and appreciation of all things Devonian. It is the only society concerned with every aspect of the county and is the only one of its kind in Britain. The Committee’s Report has been organised with the following section headings: General Folk-Lore, Charms, Witchcraft, Ghosts and Supernatural Beings, Warnings, Stories and Traditions, Popular Sayings; and Notes referring to old names and customs. The article, from a copy of a rare and much sought-after journal can be downloaded from the Internet Archive. Google has sponsored the digitisation of books from several libraries. These books, on which copyright has expired, are available for free educational and research use, both as individual books and as full collections to aid researchers.
The Committee:
Mr. P. F. S, Amery, Mr. R. Dymond, Rev. W. Harpley, Mr. P. Q, Karkeek, Mr. R. J. King, and Mr. J. Brooking Rowe—established for the purpose of collecting notes on Devonshire Folk-Lore.
