The Fauna of Devon: Phytophagous Hymenoptera – Saw Flies
by
Edward Parfitt
Trans. Devon Assoc. Vol. XX. (1888), pp. 332- 351.
Prepared by Michael Steer
The Paper was presented at the Association’s July 1888, St. Exeter meeting. Sawflies are insects of the suborder Symphyta, within the remarkable order Hymenoptera, in which are found ants, bees, and wasps. Their name comes from the saw-like appearance of the ‘ovipositor’, the tube-like organ used by some insects to lay eggs. In this instance which the females use to cut into the plants where they lay their eggs. Specimens listed in the catalogue as an appendix to the Paper were collected in specifically identified locations throughout Devon, particularly the Exeter area, by most of those individuals recorded in the index. For the genealogist, the paper is a treasury of names associated with the earliest research into our county’s unique natural history. The author’s obituary is available in GENUKI. The Paper, from a copy of a rare scientific journal can be downloaded from the Internet Archive. Google has sponsored the digitisation of books from several libraries. These books, on which copyright has expired, are available for free educational and research use, both as individual books and as full collections to aid researchers.
