TThis important Paper was presented at the Association’s July 1895 Okehampton meeting. For genealogists, the paper is a treasury of names and places associated with the early records of our county’s unique history and is related to the Association’s remarkable Devonshire Domesday book preparation project. In his paper, the author attempts, not without criticism and fierce rebuttal, to identify our county’s early Hundreds by comparing their names as recorded by early county historians Risdon and Pole. A Hundred was the division under common law of a shire for administrative, military, and judicial purposes. First introduced by the Saxons, it had enough land to sustain about 100 households headed by a hundred-man or hundred ‘eolder’. The author, Richard Nicholls Worth (19 July 1837- 3 July 1896) was a celebrated geologist and historian of the City of Plymouth who devoted his spare time from work as a journalist, to investigating the history and geology of the Westcountry. He was twice Plymouth Association President, and in 1891 President of the Devonshire Association. His obituary is available in GENUKI.
