Seaside Studies at Ilfracombe, Tenby, the Scilly Isles and Jersey
by
George Henry Lewes
London: William Blackwood & Sons (1858). illus. pp x, 438. [Westcountry Studies Library, Plymouth Library, Torquay Library]
Prepared by Michael Steer
The book is a treasure-trove for those interested in the history of zoology. Its author is perhaps best remembered for his scandalous open relationship with George Eliot. He was a philosopher and literary critic, born in London in 1817. Having abandoned successively a commercial and a medical career, between 1841 and 1850 he appeared several times on the stage, finally devoting himself to literature, science and philosophy. From about 1853 he occupied himself with scientific and more particularly biological work. The most important of his essays are collected in this volume; Seaside Studies (1858), Physiology of Common Life (1859), and Studies in Animal Life (1862). This rare and much sought-after book was produced digitally from a copy in the University of Michigan Library collection and can be downloaded from Google Books. Google has sponsored the digitisation of books from several libraries. These books, on which copyright has expired, are available for free educational and research use, both as individual books and as full collections to aid researchers.
