Words Current in Devonshire in the Fifteenth Century
but which are now Obsolete or Obsolescents

Trans. Devon Assoc., vol.  XIV, (1882), pp. 199-220.

by

W. Pengelly, F.R.S., F.G.S, Etc.

Prepared by Michael Steer

The Paper was presented at the Association’s July 1882, Crediton meeting. The author takes the reader into the educative and entertaining area of Devon’s 15th century philology. For an English word to be considered obsolete, there must be no evidence of its use since 1755 - publication year of Samuel Johnson’s Dictionary. Archaic words, however, are defined as those once commonly used but now only heard sporadically or in special contexts. The distinguished author’s extensive obituary is available here. For the genealogist, Mr. Pengelly’s paper is a treasury of names associated with the earliest research into our county’s unique philological history. The Paper, from a copy of a rare and much sought-after journal can be downloaded from the Internet Archive. Google has sponsored the digitisation of books from several libraries. These books, on which copyright has expired, are available for free educational and research use, both as individual books and as full collections to aid researchers.
