The Plymouth and Devonport Guide: With Sketches of the Surrounding Scenery
by
Henry Edmund Carrington
Devonport: Buyers, Printer and Bookseller to H.R.H. the Duke of Clarence; and Longman & Co. London (1828), 292 pp.
Index prepared by Michael Steer
H. E. Carrington, (1806-1859) was the son of poet Nicholas Toms Carrington. His "The Plymouth and Devonport Guide" is an extremely good account of the Plymouth area in 1828. In the 1820's Plymouth was a prosperous port town, separated along the coast of Plymouth Sound from the neighbouring towns of East Stonehouse and Devonport; collectively known as the Three Towns. As an example of its prosperity, Union Street was designed by architect John Foulston, and was laid out between 1812 and 1820 as a grand boulevard to connect the three towns. Today it forms part of the A374. Throughout the Industrial Revolution Plymouth grew as a major shipping port, handling imports and passengers from the Americas, while neighbouring Devonport grew as an important Royal Naval shipbuilding and dockyard town. The county boroughs of Plymouth and Devonport, and the urban district of East Stonehouse were merged in 1914 to form the single county borough of Plymouth - The city's naval importance later led to its partial destruction during World War II.
