The President’s Address
Trans. Devon. Assoc., vol. XXXII (1900), pp. 25-34.
by
The Right Hon. The Lord Clifford, M.A., J.P.
Prepared by Michael Steer
The Devonshire Association’s Presidential Address was delivered at its August 1900 Totnes meeting. On that occasion, the President, himself a ‘military man’, spoke on the part Devon played in several attempts made by the Spanish during the Tudor era to invade and conquer England. The Association’s President for 1900 was Lewis Henry Hugh Clifford, ninth Baron Clifford of Chudleigh who during this period was lieutenant-colonel commanding the 5th Devon Volunteer Infantry Regiment (1881-1901), and honorary colonel of the battalion from 1903-8. He commanded the Devon Volunteer Infantry Brigade from 1901 to 1908, and the Devon and Cornwall Infantry Brigade from 1908 to 1911. He was A.D.C. to King Edward VII for Volunteers from 1901 to 1910. His impressive obituary is available in GENUKI. Lord Clifford’s Presidential Address, from a copy of a rare journal can be downloaded from the Internet Archive.
