The Report was read at its July 25th, 1876 Ashburton meeting. It was the Council’s 14th Annual Report and provides the genealogist with the names of the Association’s early office-bearers, as well as a list of the papers and their authors, delivered at its 13th annual meeting, which had been held over three days at Torrington in the previous year. After the Council had completed its business, members were formally received by the Corporation in the Town Hall. The Mayor of Torrington (Mr. Jackson) presided. Mr. Doe (the Town Clerk) read an Address, which expressed “the Corporation's deep sense of the honour conferred on the town by the visit of the Association, assuring them that, though they could not boast of any distinguished votaries of science, literature, and art among themselves, they fully appreciated the disinterested labours of students in those branches of learning which have so greatly aided the progress of civilization, and the promotion of human happiness”.
