The President's Address

Trans. Devon. Assoc., vol. 2, Part 5, (1866), pp. 1-12.

by

The Right Honourable Earl Russell, K.G.

Prepared by Michael Steer

The Presidential Address, was presented at the Association’s August 1866 Tavistock meeting. The incoming President, John Russell, 1st Earl Russell, KG, GCMG, PC, FRS (18 August 1792 – 28 May 1878), was a Whig and Liberal statesman who was Prime Minister from 1846 to 1852 and again from 1865 to 1866. He was educated at Westminster School and Edinburgh University. As well as classically educated he was religious in a simple non-dogmatic way and supported "broad church" stances in the Church of England.  His grandson, Bertrand Russell became a noted philosopher who in later life recalled his elderly grandfather as "a kindly old man in a wheelchair." Lord John’s extensive biography with portrait may be accessed in Wikipedia. The Address, from a copy of a rare and much sought-after journal can be downloaded from the Internet Archive. Google has sponsored the digitisation of books from several libraries. These books, on which copyright has expired, are available for free educational and research use, both as individual books and as full collections to aid researchers.
