The Report of the Council

Trans. Devon Assoc., vol. 2, 1864. pp. 5-8.

by

Rev. W Harpley, M.A., F.C.P.S.

Prepared by Michael Steer

The Report was read at its July 29th, 1863 Plymouth meeting. This important record is the first Annual Report of The Council of the Devon Association for the Advancement of Science, Literature, and Art. It provides the genealogist with the names of the Association’s first office-bearers, as well as a list of the papers and their authors, delivered at its first meeting at the Clarence Hotel in Exeter. The last day of that meeting “was devoted to a visit to that most interesting locality, the Bovey Heathfield, under the able guidance of William Pengelly, Esq.” The Secretary reported that through the courtesy and liberality of the Directors of the South Devon Railway, they were enabled to secure to the Members, facilities in travelling to the next meeting”. The Report, from a copy of a rare and much sought-after journal can be downloaded from the Internet Archive. (A transcript of this Report may also be accessed here.) Google has sponsored the digitisation of books from several libraries. These books, on which copyright has expired, are available for free educational and research use, both as individual books and as full collections to aid researchers.
