Prepared by Michael Steer
The Devonshire Association’s Presidential Address was presented at its July 1889 Tavistock meeting. It focused on the ancient physical history (geology) of England’s south-western extremity, with special reference to the country around Dartmoor. Tavistock, he asserted, occupied a central position in a peninsular region that extended from Exmoor to Land's End. The President, Wilfred Hudleston Hudleston FRS (née Simpson) was a celebrated geologist, ornithologist and paleontologist. His biography with portrait is available in Wikipedia. The Presidential Address, from a copy of a rare journal can be downloaded from the Internet Archive. Google has sponsored the digitisation of books from several libraries. These books, on which copyright has expired, are available for free educational and research use, both as individual books and as full collections to aid researchers.
