President’s Address

Trans. Devon. Assoc., vol. XV, (1883), pp. 33-51.

by

The Very Reverend C. Merivale, D.D., D.C.L.

Prepared by Michael Steer

The Devonshire Association’s Presidential Address was presented at its July 1883 Exmouth meeting. The author was a celebrated historian and for many years dean of Ely Cathedral. He was one of the main instigators of the inaugural Oxford and Cambridge Boat Race which took place at Henley in 1829. His biography, including a portrait is available here. The Address, from a copy of a rare and much sought-after journal can be downloaded from the Internet Archive. Google has sponsored the digitisation of books from several libraries. These books, on which copyright has expired, are available for free educational and research use, both as individual books and as full collections to aid researchers.
