President’s Address

Trans. Devon. Assoc., vol. XVI, (1884), pp. 33-51.

by

Rev. T.R.R. Stebbing, M.A.

Prepared by Michael Steer

The Devonshire Association’s Presidential Address was presented at its July 1884 Newton Abbot meeting. The author Thomas Roscoe Rede Stebbing was a celebrated zoologist, who described himself as "a serf to natural history, principally employed about Crustacea". Although an ordained Anglican priest he promoted Darwinism in several popular works and as a result was banned from preaching. His biography, including a portrait and a cartoon is available here.  His Presidential Address, from a copy of a rare and much sought-after journal can be downloaded from the Internet Archive. Google has sponsored the digitisation of books from several libraries. These books, on which copyright has expired, are available for free educational and research use, both as individual books and as full collections to aid researchers.
