The Tax Roll For Devon. 31 Edward I.

Trans. Devon Assoc., vol. XXXI, vol. I, Second Series, (1899), pp. 376-429.

by

Rev. T.W. Whale

Prepared by Michael Steer

This important paper with its invaluable genealogical data-base was presented at the Association's August, 1899, Torrington meeting. Taxes on individuals during the medieval and early modern periods were levied by the Crown to provide income for specific items of expenditure, for example, military campaigns. The Roll is preserved in the National Archive and is the sole taxation record for Devon from Domesday until 1303-4. The record is arranged in Hundreds making it particularly valuable to the genealogist for associating early surnames with places. The Paper’s author, Rev Thomas William Whale was an erudite Oxford graduate and sometime rector of Dolton in North Devon. The Devon Archives and Local Studies Centre houses a collection of letters and postcards sent to him by his friend Rev O J Reichel who was also a prolific contributor to the Association’s Transactions. Rev. Whale’s obituary is available in GENUKI.

Google with the Archive Organization has sponsored the digitisation of books from several libraries. The Internet Archive makes available, in its Community Texts Collection (originally known as Open Source Books), books that have been digitised by Google from a number of libraries. These are books on which copyright has expired and are available free for educational and research use. The present rare book was produced from a copy held by the New York Public Library, and is available from the Internet Archive.
