The National Gazetteer of Great Britain and Ireland - 1868

"ELING, a parish in the hundred of Redbridge, Romsey division of county Hants, 3 miles N.W. of Southampton, its post town. The Totton station, on the London and South-Western railway, is about 1; mile to the N.W. of the village. It is situated at the upper end of the Southampton Water, near the river:Test, and is of great extent, including several townships and hamlets, the principal of which are North and South Eling, Marchwood, Netley, and Totton, and the manor of Bury Farm, which last is held of the crown by the tenure of presenting to the king, on his visiting the New Forest, a brace of white greyhounds in silver couples, which ceremony was last performed in 1789, on the event of George III.'s visit to Lindhurst.

The village is called in Domesday Survey, Edlinges, and was at that time a place of considerable importance, having a church, two mills a fishery, and a saltern. It at present carries on a considerable trade in corn, timber, and coal, and has great facilities for ship-building, on account of its proximity to the New Forest. The ship-building establishment has, however, been removed to the opposite side of the water, at Redbridge. At Marchwood, about 2 miles to the E. of the village, is an extensive powder-magazine for the supply of the garrison at Portsmouth. The workhouse for the New Forest Poor-law Union is situated in this parish.

The living is a vicarage in the diocese of Winchester, value £630. The parish church, dedicated to St. Mary, is a structure of the 11th century, of stone and flint, but has been enlarged at different periods, thus exhibiting various styles of architecture. There are also the following district churches-St. John's, Marchwood, a perpetual curacy,* value £121; Netley, perpetual curacy*; North Eling, vicarage, value £260. The charities consist of almshouses for 4 persons and a small school endowment. The Rev. Sir J. B. Mill, Bart., is lord of the manor. A handsome manor-house has been recently built near the S. foot of Tachbury Mount, on the summit of which are the remains of a British military station, with trenches-leading from the terrace by which it is surrounded. The principal seats are Bartley House and Bartley Lodge; the former the residence of Lord Vivian; the latter, of the Hon. R. Blaquiere. "BAULDOXFEE, a tything in the parish of Eling and hundred of Redbridge, in the county of Southampton, 3 miles to the W. of Southampton. "BISTERN, a tything joined with Bartley, in the parish of Eling, and hundred of Redbridge, in the county of Southampton, 4 miles from Southampton.

BISTERN, an extra-parochial liberty in the division and hundred of Ringwood, in the county of Southampton, near Ringwood, its post town. The living is a curacy annexed to the vicarage of Ringwood, in the diocese of Winchester. "COLEBURY, a tything in the parish of Eling, in the county of Hants, 4 miles W. of Southampton. "DURLEY, a tything in the parish of Eling, in the county of Hants, 5 miles W. of Southampton. "LANGLEY, a tything in the parish of Eling, county Hants, 4 miles W. of Southampton. "LOPPERWOOD, a tything in the parish of Eling, county Hants, 4 miles N.W. of Southampton. Lopperwood House is the chief seat. "MARCHWOOD, a tything in the parish of Eling, county Hants, 2 miles S.W. of Southampton. It is a small fishing village on the coast, containing a coastguard station and Decoy Pond. The living is a perpetual curacy* in the diocese of Winchester. The church is a small modern structure, dedicated to St. John. The principal seat is Marchwood Lodge. "OWER, a tything in the parish of Eling, county Hants, 3 miles S.W. of Romsey. It is in conjunction with Wade. "PAULTON PARK, a demesne in the parish of Eling, hundred of King's-Somburn, county Hants, 3 miles S.W. of Romsey, and 10 N.W. of Southampton. The grounds were laid out by Browne. "RUMBRIDGE, a tything in the parish of Eling, county Hants, 4 miles N.W. of Southampton. It comprises the Forest union poorhouse. "TATCHBURY, a tything in the parish of Eling, county Hants, 4 miles S.W. of Romsey. It has traces of a Roman station at Tatchbury Mount. "TESTWOOD, a tything in the parish of Eling, county Hants, 4 miles N.W. of Southampton, on the river Teat, near Southampton Water. "WADE, a tything in the parish of Eling, county Hants, 3 miles W. of Southampton. "WIGLEY, a tything in the parish of Eling, county Hants, 2½ miles S.W. of Romsey."
