"CHALK, a parish in the hundred of Shamwell, lathe of Aylesford, in the county of Kent, 2½ miles S. of Gravesend, its post town, and 3 from Rochester. The North Kent railway and the Medway canal intersect the parish, and the Thames bounds it on the N. There was formerly a manufactory of gun-flints here, which were reckoned the best in Europe. The living is a vicarage in the diocese of Rochester, value £200, in the patronage of the lord chancellor. The church, dedicated to St. Mary, is an ancient flint structure, with some curious carvings over the porch. The churchyard has some ancient tombstones. Here is a National school. A fair is held on Whit-Monday."
