The National Gazetteer of Great Britain and Ireland - 1868

In 1868, the parish of Aghanloo contained the following places:

"AGHANLOO, (or Aghanloe), a parish in the barony of Keenaght, in the county of Londonderry, province of Ulster, Ireland, 3 miles to the N. of Newtonlimavady. It is situated on the river Roe and Lough Foyle, into which the Roe flows, at the foot of the mountain Ben Evenagh. This mountain, which is of basalt, rises to the height of 1,260 feet, and was one of the points selected for the measurements under the Ordnance survey. The soil is mostly fertile and well cultivated. There is abundance of limestone found under the basalt throughout the parish. The living is a rectory in the diocese of Derry and Raphoe, value £296, in the patronage of the bishop. Here are ruins of Bally Castle, which was built in 1619 by the London Haberdashers' Company, for the defence of the territory allotted to them on the plantation of Ulster.
