The National Gazetteer of Great Britain and Ireland - 1868

In 1868, the parish of Faughanvale contained the following places:

"FAUGHANVALE, a parish in the barony of Tirkeeran, county Londonderry, province of Ulster, Ireland, 4 miles E. of Londonderry. Eglinton, in Derry, is its post town. It is situated on the eastern shore of the Faughanvale river, with Lough Foyle on its northern border. The surface consists generally of good land, and is traversed by the road from Londonderry to Coleraine. In 1609 the greater part of this parish was granted- to the Grocers' Company, who erected a castle, strongly fortified; which yielded to the parliament in 1641-2, after a protracted siege. The Glebe House now occupies its ancient site. Here are slate quarries and remains of an oak forest. The living is a rectory in the diocese of Derry, value £94, in the patronage of the crown. The church is a handsome building, erected in 1821 by means of a loan from the late Board of First Fruits. Near it are the ruins of a church built in 1626 by the Grocers' Company, and at a distance of 3 miles are the remains of the ancient parish church. The Roman Catholic chapel is united to those of Kill St. Nicholas and Killea. There are also a Presbyterian meeting-house and six public schools in the parish. The principal seats are Foyle Park and Willsbrough."

"MUFF, a post-office village in the parish of Faughanvale, barony of Tirkeeran, county Londonderry, province of Leinster, Ireland, 6 miles N.E. of Londonderry. It is situated on the road from Londonderry to Coleraine, near Lough Foyle. Here are the parish church, schools, courthouse, market-house, and a dispensary within the Londonderry Poor-law Union. There is also a police station in the village, and petty sessions are held regularly at the courthouse. The town was founded in the time of James I. by the Grocers' Company, to whom with adjacent lands it now belongs. Fairs are held on the first Thursdays in February, May, August, and November."
